Dr. Jena worked on improvement of indica and japonica rice for higher yield and biotic stresses resistance using classical genetics, molecular genetics and genomics approaches towards global food security. He developed five high yielding varieties using DNA marker-assisted rice breeding programs for commercial cultivation. He has identified novel resistance genes for resistance to insect and diseases of rice, and successfully cloned and characterized the brown planthopper (BPH) resistance gene, BPH18 that encodes NB-NBS-LRR protein He utilized the resistance genes and their pyramids for durable resistance to biotic stresses of rice. He was pioneer in chromosome engineering of rice and developed several monosomic alien addition lines (MAALs) as well as near isogenic lines (NILs) with high potential resistance exotic novel genes for their site specific deployment in disease and insect endemic regions. He has broken yield barrier of elite indica rice cultivars by transferring epigenetic foot print of the OsSPL14 WFP gene.

Current research interest
Besides academic teaching at the KSBT, Dr. Jena has the following research interest.

  • Understanding the physiology and molecular mechanism of salinity tolerance in rice. Applying biotechnology tools toward isolation of causal salt tolerant gene from a halophyte and its transfer into Indian rice varieties for salt stress adaptation.
  • Understanding molecular genetic interaction and cross talk between insect and disease resistance genes conferring resistance to race and biotype specificity.

Achievements

  • A high yielding insect resistant variety (Anmi) developed and released for commercial cultivation in the Republic of Korea.
  • Three high yielding blast disease resistant varieties (Zeybek, Asli, Bereket) developed for commercial cultivation in the Republic of Turkey.
  • Isolated a BPH resistance gene, BPH18 by molecular cloning and characterization and understood the constitutive expression of the gene in defending insect attack on rice plant.
  • Applied genomics approaches in transferring and expressing OsCKX2 and OsSPL14 genes for increasing indica rice yield dramatically,
  • Applied DNA marker-assisted breeding for modern variety development and demonstrated resistance gene pyramiding strategies for disease resistance.
  • Developed near isogenic lines (NILs) for disease and insect resistance genes and fine mapped a durable blast resistance gene (Pi40).
  • QTL markers for seedling and reproductive stage cold tolerance genes in rice developed.
