Project: Biogas Development and Training Centre

The main focus of the research group is ‘Biosourcing of alternate energy sources from organic materials and technology fine-tuning for enhanced production’. The group is also involved in development of strategies for efficient biogas production through substrate, physical, chemical, microbiological and molecular interventions. The major objectives of project BDTC are:

  • To develop environmentally-sound and user-acceptable sustainable technology package
  • Technology refinement for biogas production using any organic waste as a substrate
  • Biosourcing efficient fermentative, acidogenic and methanogenic microbes for biomethanation.

The initial phase of the programme is to conduct lab-scale operations to optimise the physicochemical parameters and controlled biological activity, which shall follow an upgraded large-scale (industrial) model for the successful interventions. The major challenge here is to design a working bioreactor model which is socially and economically accepted and, more importantly, drives down the cost of construction and design making the technology-package more techno-economically feasible.
