Kshirod Kumar Jena

Professor Emeritus

Kshirod Jena has over 35 years research and teaching experience. After completing PhD from Utkal University, he did his post doctoral research at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Manila, Philippines, and worked as a visiting faculty at University of Georgia, Athens, USA. He worked at IRRI as a senior scientist and Principal Scientist in Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biotechnology division from 2001-2018. He guided 20 PhD students and 25 MSc students. He has developed a set of primary trisomics in rice and transferred successfully different biotic stresses resistance genes from five distantly related wild Oryza species. He has cloned and characterized one insect resistance gene (BPH18) in rice. He has transferred one yield enhancing gene, OsSPL14 into indica rice varieties and doubled the yield of rice. He has identified QTLs associated with abiotic stress tolerance in rice. Currently he is teaching advance biotechnology and plant science courses at the School of Biotechnology. He has developed five high yielding and biotic stress resistant rice varieties. He has trained more than 30 international scientists and developed international research collaboration with 10 countries. He has 62 SCI journal publications.
