The Centre basically focuses on the R&D affairs in the field of bio energy; enrichment of biogas production from kitchen and municipal waste and conducts awareness, skill development training courses, providing technical assistance in commissioning biogas projects for thermal and off-grid applications and installation of family type biogas plants. It has successfully been implementing the Biogas programme under the National Biogas and Manure Management Programme (NBMMP) and The New National Bioenergy Programme (NNBOMP) since FY 2010-11. Currently, this BDTC as a Programme Implementing Agency (PIA) has been implementing the National Bioenergy Programme (NBP), Phase-1 (FY 2022-23 to FY 2025-26).

Mandated Activities of the BDTC

Users cum Awareness Courses; To raise awareness and publicity about the benefits of biogas, operation and maintenance of plants amongst the potential biogas users

CMC/Mason training courses;

To create a cadre of biogas masons and technicians skilled in the construction, installation commissioning and maintenance of approved models of biogas plants i.e. Deenbandhu fixed dome model, KVIC floating metal Gas holder with brick masonry digester models, digester made of ferro-cement, gas holder model of FRP and Pragati models as approved models by MNRE. Also imparting training for new and innovative models of plants as and when approved by MNRE for inclusion in the National Bioenergy Programm

About the Principal Investigator of KIIT-BDTC

Dr. Snehasish Mishra, Associate Professor, PhD (Life Sciences) has deep research exposure in the areas of microbiology, renewable energy and bioprocess engineering.With two years of industrial experience and 16 years of academic experience, he has significantly contributed in research, development and extension of Renewable energy, effective utilisation of digested slurry using kitchen waste in family type biogas plants, Municipal solid waste management with both pre and post treated approach in enrichment of bio-methanation potential of agricultural refuses and expertise in biopower production projects (off-grid). He has authored research and popular articles, and book chapters, with more than 17 publications in peer reviewed journals and books of national and international repute. He is regularly involved in mentoring trainings and workshops under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Govt. of India for skill-development and livelihoods of the farming community, Dairies and poultry entrepreneurs. He has successfully guided, and continues to guide numerous PhDs, MScs and students under internship.

Turn-Key Workers Courses

To create a cadre of Biogas Turn-Key Workers / Biogas entrepreneurs in rural areas for setting up of biogas plants on Turn-Key basis and providing post-installation servicing of plants as a self-employed vocation.

bio-gas-turn-key

Staff training courses

To give exposure to Officials of Rural Development Departments/State Nodal Agencies and KVIC and other stakeholders such as Supervisors / Functionaries of Panchayati Raj Institutions / Bank Officials & Staff to various aspects of biogas technology and to familiarize them with the importance of Biogas Technology and biogas as a fuel for many applications and present status of biogas programme, inter-alia details about how Biogas Plants are constructed.

Inspection of family type biogas plants

BDTCs are mandated to monitor the functionality of biogas plants installed by other Programme Implementing agencies/State nodal agencies/ Rural Development Departments. This is necessary to prevent plants of becoming defunct for a long time with trouble shooting suggestions to beneficiaries.

Installation of family type Biogas plants; BDTCs have been assigned targets in every financial year since FY 2023-24 installation of family type biogas plants up to 25 cubic meters.
